The SMC AW40-03E-D Filter Regulator combines compressed-air filtration and pressure regulation in a compact modular unit designed for industrial pneumatic systems. Part of SMC’s current AW-D Series, the AW40-03E-D helps reduce installation space and piping by integrating two essential air-preparation functions into a single component.
This body size 40 configuration features 3/8-inch Rc inlet and outlet ports and provides a nominal filtration rating of 5 µm to help remove particulate contamination from the compressed-air supply. The relieving regulator provides an adjustable pressure setting range of 0.05 to 0.85 MPa, with a maximum operating pressure of 1.0 MPa.
The E configuration includes a square embedded pressure gauge with limit indicator, providing convenient visual monitoring of regulated downstream pressure without requiring a separately mounted gauge. The AW40-03E-D uses a manual drain configuration and incorporates SMC’s transparent bowl guard, which surrounds the filter bowl for improved environmental protection while maintaining 360-degree visibility of accumulated condensate.
SMC designed the AW-D Series with improved usability and maintenance in mind. The regulator adjustment knob is shaped for easier handling when unlocked, while the updated two-layer bowl construction combines visibility with enhanced protection. SMC also maintains mounting interchangeability between the previous and current product generations, with compatible brackets and set nuts carried over between the existing and refreshed designs.
The AW40-03E-D is well suited for factory automation, machine building, packaging equipment, material handling systems, assembly machinery, and other compressed-air applications requiring both particulate filtration and controlled downstream air pressure.

Current-Generation AW-D Series
The AW40-03E-D is part of SMC’s refreshed AW-D filter regulator platform. SMC discontinued production of the previous AW-B Series in March 2025 and identifies the AW20 through AW40-D Series as its replacement. The updated AW-D design retains the compact integrated filter/regulator concept while improving regulator handling, bowl visibility, and environmental protection. It is the preferred series to consider for new applications requiring an SMC modular filter regulator.
